Mariah Carey Felt Too Young to Record a Christmas Album
Mariah Carey, the "Queen of Christmas," has revealed that she initially hesitated to record her now-iconic Christmas album, Merry Christmas, which includes the global holiday anthem, "All I Want For Christmas Is You."The 55-year-old songstress,
celebrating the 30th anniversary of the album, opened up in a recent interview
with Best magazine about her reluctance to embrace the festive project
when it was first suggested.
“I remember that I really wasn’t
sure about doing a Christmas album, even though the record company thought it
would be a good idea,” Carey shared. “I thought you did a Christmas album when
you got older, not when you’re in your 20s, as I was at that time.”
Despite her initial apprehension,
Carey eventually embraced the holiday spirit, decorating the studio with
Christmas ornaments and immersing herself in the joy of the season. “By the
time we had recorded it, I had Christmas decorations up in the studio and just
had the best time,” she reminisced.
Interestingly, Carey revealed that
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was not an instant hit upon its
release. “It took a while but it slowly took off and got bigger and bigger.
It’s incredible,” she explained.
When writing the track, Carey drew
inspiration from the cheerful and hopeful music of the 1950s and '60s. “I
wanted to write a song that captured the hopefulness of the holidays, so that
when you heard it, you couldn’t help but be happy,” she said. The enduring joy
of the song is something she still cherishes, noting, “It still makes me happy
to sing it, as I know it makes so many people happy to hear it. It’s a song
that has become part of so many people’s lives.”
As the holiday season approaches, it’s clear Mariah Carey’s influence continues to spread festive cheer worldwide.
