On December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 aircraft, operating as Flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The plane was carrying 67 individuals—62 passengers and five crew members. Kazakhstan's Emergency Ministry reports that 42 people are feared dead, while 25 survivors have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment. 

Preliminary investigations suggest that the aircraft encountered a bird strike, leading to an emergency landing attempt. Additionally, reports indicate the plane experienced GPS jamming during its flight. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by authorities from both Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. 

Eyewitnesses described a catastrophic scene, with the plane engulfed in flames upon impact. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the crash site, working diligently to rescue survivors and extinguish the fire. Among the survivors, several are reported to be in critical condition, including two children aged 11 and 16. 

In the wake of this tragedy, condolences have poured in from international leaders. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed profound sorrow and has dispatched an official delegation to Kazakhstan to assist with the investigation. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov have also extended their sympathies to the victims' families.
