The UK's financial watchdog and former Conservative chancellor Jeremy Hunt

The two -are at odds over a study of the alleged £22 billion "black hole" in the national budget that Labour says it inherited. Hunt says the watchdog will violate neutrality.

To make up for the alleged deficit, chancellor Rachel Reeves is anticipated to increase a number of taxes in her budget on Wednesday.

However, Hunt claims that the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which is not part of the government, will produce a report that day that will criticize his party and support Labour's tax increases.

However, Hunt claims that the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which is not part of the government, will produce a report that day that will criticize his party and support Labour's tax increases.

The OBR's head, Richard Hughes, told Hunt that the report would not contain "decisions of ministers" and justified its release on Budget Day.

As Reeves presents the party's first budget in over 15 years, Labour prepares for its most significant week since winning the July election.

In addition to releasing its evaluation of the chancellor's economic policies, the OBR will project how they will affect the UK economy during the ensuing five years.

But it is also preparing to release an additional report, commissioned earlier this year, on the “ adequacy of information”  supplied to it by the previous Tory government.

Hunt, a supporter of the OBR, consulted it to provide credibility for his own spending plans, but he has vented fury at the watchdog for planning to release the review into the assurances it was provided during his tenure in the Treasury.

Hunt said on Friday the planned publication date was a "significant concern" and would be seen as a "political intervention".

"I do not believe publishing a review with criticisms of the main opposition party on the day of a Budget is consistent with political impartiality," he wrote in his letter.
